Project Idea: Derecho Sweater
Did you know that we have a KAL at the shop each month? Our fabulous instructor Lindsey leads these sessions, and for June she chose the perfect sweater to kick off the summer!
The Derecho Sweater designed for Berroco by Alison Green is a great pattern for beginners and hits the sweet spot of simple design and fun to knit. The sweater calls for Berroco Remix Light which is a fantastic DK weight blend of recycled fibers that practically begs to be worked into summer garments. While pattern and yarn can be purchased separately, we also have great kits available in the shop or online!
The Derecho Sweater has a classic top-down yoke-style construction that begins and ends with some straightforward short rows at the neck and hem. Don’t let this technique deter you! This is a great opportunity to learn short rows if you haven’t done them before, and we promise that it is truly a beginner-friendly pattern! The yoke uses eyelets and garter bumps to create its signature design before you’re off onto a relaxing body of stockinette, making it a perfect project for poolside knitting!

One of the features Lindsey loves about this project is that it is easily customizable. Being top-down construction, the sweater is easy to try on in order to perfect the length of the body. (Wouldn’t this look incredible cropped?! Or extended into a tunic??) Don’t feel like making a summery version? The sleeves can be knit to your favorite length, taking this from a warm-weather top to winter staple with little extra effort!
