Project Idea: Yell Sweater
If you’re getting ready for warmer weather, but haven’t quite given up knitting with wool, have we got a cardigan for you! This colorwork sweater knit in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift yarn is simply stunning and the perfect piece for layering as we transition from winter coats to lighter jackets.
A pattern for intermediate to experienced knitters, Yell by Marie Wallin is worked in the round and then steeked to open the cardigan. Instructions are included for the steeking process which is especially helpful if you’ve never used this technique before. The pattern is written out and motifs are also shared in charts.

The loose, square-ish silhouette of this cardigan makes it extremely flattering for a wide variety of body shapes. The pattern is also size inclusive with bust measurements ranging from 32-50 inches - aided in part by the generous amount of positive ease suggested. Wear it open and the sweater drapes so the center rises a big for an asymmetrical look. Wear it with buttons or a shawl pin for a more traditional appearance.

The construction of this sweater also makes it a great pattern for “firsts.” Many knitters are intimidated by steeking because you have to cut your stitches. Gasp! With proper preparation, steeking can actually be a very straightforward and empowering process! If you haven’t taken the plunge, Marie holds your hand, and we know you will be hooked!
All over colorwork can also be a bit overwhelming if you don’t do it often - or ever! With the loose fit, there is less pressure on your strands to give or fit you perfectly. Working in the round also means that there are fewer opportunities for your gauge to change, leading to more rhythmic and consistent stranding. Using a yarn like Jamieson’s of Shetland’s Spindrift adds yet another layer of forgiveness because the yarn just blossoms when blocked, making the stitches lock together and the colors meld beautifully!

If we’ve convinced you to give this project a try, here is the basic information you’d need to get started. Completing each motif will make this an extremely satisfying project, and you’ll have such a sense of accomplishment after finishing your steeking! We are always happy to help if you run into any trouble or need assistance selecting colors. Just give us a call or stop by the shop!
