Project Idea: Falling Blossoms Shawl
Shawls and wraps are the perfect spring and summer accessories for warding off the cool evening breeze or blowing air conditioning. They are also a veritable playground for colors, textures and designs.
The Falling Blossom Shawl is a beautiful little shawl designed in Malabrigo Sock, which we loved using for the Temperance Shawl last month! The light fingering superwash Merino yarn works up beautifully and shines in designer Ana’s eyelet and lace pattern. Perfect for the experienced crocheter looking for a quick summery project or the adventurous beginner dipping their toes into lace, we’ve heard many people make this pattern multiple times!
Crocheted from solid tip to the wide lace end, this shawl hits that ideal blend of relaxing and engaging with it’s laid back eyelets and fun, but not overly complicated lace. The shawl is designed as a one-skein piece, but each section is easily customized in terms of size, length and color! With fewer repeats, this makes a gorgeous bandana cowl and with more repeats, you have the opportunity for more wraps around your neck or draping the piece across your shoulders. Mix and match colors for each section, use variegated yarn or introduce a fade for a truly stunning accessory.
Light fingering weight yarn and the lace construction will give this piece an airy feel, but a good firm blocking will unlock its full potential. This will open up the design of the flowers and give the eyelets the prominent look that makes them stand out as features. If you are a tight crocheter, try going up a hook size - or two! - and see what your swatches feel like. Not one for summer accessories? Using a DK weight yarn and appropriate hook would easily take this from the golden hours of summer to a warmer and festive holiday piece!
Changing designs at each section will keep things interesting while the floral lace is accessible for advanced beginners - even if it looks more intricate! So, if we’ve convinced you to give this project a try, here is the basic information you’d need to get started. If you are new to lace or haven’t worked a particular stitch before, we are happy to help. Just give us a call or stop by the shop!
