Organization Inspiration: Tools

Keeping ourselves organized as makers can be challenging, but it can also be critical for budgeting, useful when starting a new project, and beautiful if you think outside the box!

None of us have the exact same style, mental processes or physical space available, so don't try to put yourself into anyone else's organizational system. Pick and choose what works for you.

Let's chat about ideas for storing our tools!

Crochet Hooks

Crochet hooks have come a long way from their strictly utilitarian wood or metal ancestors. Ergonomic handles, magic wands, characters, colors - you name it, there's a crochet hook for it!

If you switch between crochet hooks frequently, having something out on display may make the most sense. A specially designed holder like the one Sarah from the blog Repeat Crafter Me uses is beautiful, but keep in mind that most holders only have spaces for one of each size hook.

A good old fashioned canning jar can be embellished to suit any style and would keep a number of your most-used hooks handy. A low vase, a decorative wooden box, an old mail sorter, small flower pot, toothbrush holder, tennis ball can, truly any vessel with an open top that is no taller than your shortest hook can be a viable option for displaying your hooks!

If you don't change hooks as often or simply don't want/need them out in the open, bags like the small Project Pouches or Fiesta Pouches from AcademicHobbyist are a simple way to store hooks. These also make it your tools super portable and contain them in larger project bags or storage containers. If you maintain an extensive collection of hooks, consider something where you can divide your hooks by size like small drawer units, old library card catalog systems, artist brush boxes, or even silverware dividers! (Bonus points if the dividers are adjustable!)

Knitting Needles

A challenge with knitting needles is that they come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and styles. From straight needles to double pointed to circular and interchangeable, one size doesn't always fit all for storage.

Storing straight needles and double points could follow many of the same principles as with crochet hooks described above. Open topped vases, jars, pots or bottles would make beautiful displays for quick access. Divided storage bins or drawers for separating sizes can be tucked into cupboards or closets or set on shelves for closed storage options.

Interchangeable needles mean more pieces, but also more options. Small tool boxes or even tackle boxes have small compartments that are often customizable and could be made to fit tips and/or cords. If you have lots of cords, consider hanging them on an adjustable peg board on your wall where they are easy to sort, label and use, but also create a modern art piece!

Don't think we forgot storage cases! Whether you're handy with a sewing machine and want to make your own or you purchase a pre-made case, there are lots of options for fabric cases that have slots stitched into them to hold crochet hooks and/or knitting needles. Many have amenities built in like zippers, pockets for notions, straps for snips or even magnets for holding tapestry needles or stitch markers within easy reach! Some tool sets come with a case, but don't be afraid to try out something new if it isn't working for you!

Just look at some of the options that come up when you search "Hook Storage" on Ravelry! You could make your own case using the tools you need to store!
