Welcome to Stash Dive with MFY where we take a deeper look at the brands we carry and the hearts behind them!

About malabrigo

Based in Uruguay and Peru, malabrigo is a family-owned business that is passionate about inspiring people through color and quality yarns. They pull from the beauty of the nature around them, places beyond them and the day-to-day life that surrounds them.

Founded by two brothers-in-law in 2005, the first skeins of malabrigo yarn were dyed in a pot on the kitchen stove. Since finding success and expanding, operations are now based in Peru with a studio in Montevideo for product development.

If you have a chance and want to enjoy beautiful scenery, fiber and music, spend 2:40 watching this video about malabrigo and their values.

Where did the name malabrigo come from?

As paraphrased from the malabrigo website...

"Mal abrigo" roughly translates to "bad shelter", which is by all accounts a curious name for a yarn company.

The name partially comes from the small village of Mal Abrigo in Uruguay. It was named as such because it is extremely windy and back when people rode horses and too often had to take shelter for the night, it was renowned for being a terrible place to stop.

We were also inspired by novelists who set their novels in magical but imaginary towns. In our minds, malabrigo is an imaginary and chilly place where the weather drives everyone inside to knit, or to cozy up to the fire, where wool sweaters, hats, and scarves are always useful!

malabrigo's Values & Impact

malabrigo actively seeks to employ women and especially those who may have fewer advantages than normal. They are also conscious of the environment using as few chemicals as possible and maximizing their efficiencies to use as little water as necessary during their daily dying process.

A vast majority of the fiber malabrigo uses comes from free-range sheep living on farms in Uruguay with - as they say - "actual old-style shepherds." All sources of fiber are mulesing-free.
