Welcome to the MFY Make Your Pet a Sweater Make Along (MAL)! Our pets are more than crochet- and knit-worthy, so let's make them sweaters! We have found two patterns set up as tutorials for creating the perfect fit for your furry, feathered or even scaly family members! Using a bit of math - don't be intimidated, we can help! - you'll create your own pattern that is tailor made to your pet.
This is a great project for intermediate knitters and crocheters, but beginners should not be deterred! This is a wonderful opportunity to gain confidence with garment construction, and we have tutorials to help you along the way!
Suggested Yarns: Washable yarns are a great choice for this project, but you can use whatever you're comfortable with and works for your pet!
Tools & Notions: In addition to your yarn, you will need a set of circular knitting needles or crochet hook of appropriate size for your yarn, a soft tape measure, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle. It also helps to have your pet handy for measuring and fittings! 😁
Schedule: February 1st-28th
Community: Join us as we celebrate our beloved pets! We will have activity on our Instagram and Facebook feeds throughout the KAL, as well as a private Facebook group dedicated to our MFY make alongs!
Assistance: If you want to participate but have never made a sweater or done a project like this, consider signing up for a pet sweater workshop. For extra help, sign up for Knitting BYOP bundle or Crochet BYOP bundle! We’d love to help you with your project :)
Tutorials: We also have video tutorials available with tips and tricks to help you work through your project. Below are some we think will be particularly helpful for this pattern!
Behind the Design: The following is shared from the knit pattern design page on Ravelry as written by the designer, Jeslane.
In early 2011, this pattern was born out of need to create a sweater for my 3-legged (& slightly lopsided) love, Luna. In a burst of inspiration, I published the pattern on Ravelry so others could enjoy its simplicity as well. I never imagined that a decade later, it would be published in multiple languages and [more than] 2000 sweaters created around the world, and sweaters for not only dogs- but cats, rabbits, iguanas, guinea pigs, and more. I hope this pattern continues to bring perfect-fitting sweaters to your quadruped friends for many more years to come. Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful support over the last 10 years.
More about Luna:
In 2010, 3 month old Luna, a street dog in Kathmandu,Nepal, was hit by a car that resulted in one amputated leg and injuries on all other three legs. While nursing her back to health, Luna and I fell in love and I realized I could not leave her to fend for herself on the streets with 3 legs, so I brought her back to the United States.
As you work on your project, we would love if you share your progress by tagging us on Instagram and/or Facebook @michiganfineyarns and using our project hashtags #michiganfineyarns #MFYmal. You can also join us during open table times at the shop and knit with fellow makers!
